EMBODIED PRACTICES – A Weekend Immersion with Julie Martin
30 AUG – 2 SEPT 2018 in Copenhagen
It can often be a struggle to be a yoga practitioner and fully understand how something we do on our mats or meditation cushions can be embraced in every moment of our lives. The question is how do we truly embody the practices and all they encompass? Our bodies are containers for all our thoughts, emotions, patterns and histories. When we can look at a cellular level we understand that there is nothing in us that is separate or un-affected by what we do, think, eat, feel. Hatha Yoga is a Tantric lineage and uses the body as a tool for inquiry towards self. Often our modern yoga practices feel more like trying to fix the body into a shape instead of feeling sensation from the inside and allowing it unfold.
Using Julie’s unique form of asana and movement, somatic meditation, breath work and awareness exercises the process of “doing” the practice will arise from inside, from a felt sense, fully present with the aliveness we are looking for. These sessions will be full of curiosity and enquiry, pause and presence, stillness and movement.
All practitioners welcome.
MASTERCLASS – BRAHMANI STYLE
Thursday 30 Aug 2018 19.00-21.00
Through a mix of discussion and movement practice Julie will introduce you to an asana practice that encompasses range of motion, natural movement, finding a stability from the inside and working with integration. All ideas we will explore in depth throughout the rest of the weekend. This class will give you a taste of what is to come and guide you let go of shapes and tune into feeling.
INVESTIGATING SPIRAL MOVEMENT
Friday 31 Aug 2018 9.30-12.00
The body has no straight lines in it. The spiral movement of muscle and bone makes continuous connections throughout the body. There are no straight lines in the human anatomy. Therefore, when we allow ourselves to find the natural spirals in our movement we eliminate the sensation of force or resistance. Using the asana practice as a means to find connection with the present moment we will play with pulses, spirals and waves and then find the ability to pause and remain curious in the stillness before we move on. This flow will take you through the dynamics of spiral movements in the spine, shoulders and hips and allow freedom in stability as well as space in the joints. We will conclude with a somatic meditation.
EMBODYING ELEMENTS – UNDERSTANDING CHANGE
Friday 31 Aug 2018 13.30-16.00
Our lives are in constant flux. Time seems to pass more quickly than ever before as we receive information at our fingertips like no previous generation. Learning to embody our sensations through movement we can begin to get a better sense of connection to inner self. Working with shorter sequences the exploration of Earth, Air, Water and Fire within movement structure helps us take another step away from mere shapes to embodiments. We’ll look at what that can translate into off the mat as well. How are we really practicing our yoga off the mat during times of change?
INVESTIGATING FLUID CORE AND INTEGRATION
Saturday 1 Sept. 2018 9.30-12.00
Many practices focus on finding brute strength for stability. But the body can work much more efficiently with momentum. Strength can be gained with connection to earth through feet and hands that allows shifting weight and changing shape with dynamic results. Playing with animal location we find that our core stability is about moving through shapes instead of getting fixed in one. Fluidity can be strong but it doesn’t need to be rigid. This class will include a full asana practice and somatic meditation.
EMBODYING ELEMENTS – OPEN TO POSSIBILITIES
Saturday 1 Sept. 2018 13.30-16.00
Following on from Friday afternoon’s session, once again we will use the elements to create a structure and then be open to what may come next. Construction and de-construction of what is useful, what is movement and when does stillness arise without effort. If our asana practice is a series of movements when and how can we find presence to experience them beyond the external. Once again using shorter sequencing that is familiar, we dive into movement as meditation and give freedom to what may arise. Freedom can be unnerving but when the process is deeper than the skin and we tune into our sense, not just physical, but mental and emotional we can allow the body to guide us instead. As usual, exploration, curiosity and investigation will be the guidelines to this session.
INVESTIGATING THE BACK BEND IN FLUIDITY
Sunday 2 Sept. 2018 9.30-12.00
This class will take you through preparation to find fluidity in the front of the body and support in the back of the body. Putting those elements together we give space for freedom in our backbends. Struggling with back bending is common and often the struggle arises out of a need to find “the best” back bend. However, when we discover the idea of exploring movements towards a shape instead of focusing on the shape the body will follow with greater ease. We can find what is creating our resistance by negotiating with ranges of motion. Releasing the underlying resistance can open us to deeper sense of receiving. This class will be great for everyone, whether back bends are comfortable for you or not.

Julie Martin wants you to think outside the box, get off your mat, shake up the old dogmas and find freedom to unfold into the beauty of a yoga practice that emerges from the inside. With over 25 years of experience and an international following of students and teachers alike, Julie’s greatest aim is to inspire. Her particular passion for human movement means continual investigation of new anatomical approaches, working with natural movement, range of motion, integrated stability and letting go of some of the old asana myths in order to move with the body and not against it. The practice is always an enquiry, a somatic exploration of sensation, movement and stillness.
She encourages people to find their own pace, fluidity and strength in a structure that is only a "suggestion". No longer asking people to get "into" a pose, but if stillness arises in a moment then space is given to pause, feel and sense.
"Your yoga practice should invite you into relationship with your self, your body, your mind and emotions. This is not Instagram yoga or circus skills class. This is moving through layers, feeling, experiencing and observing process, moving towards stillness, moving towards self."
– Julie Martin
